VESTA – SHAPING FAMILIES

Vesta explores future forms of living and family, where chosen kinships are recognized alongside biological ties. Each person receives a personal Shape at birth, created from the unique curve of their breath. When a family is formed, these Shapes are assembled on a shared light fixture placed at the heart of the home.
The lamp not only symbolizes connection but also serves as a medium of care: through shifts in weight and light, it reflects the emotional and physical states of its members, even across distance. By merging technology, symbolism, and communication, Vesta invites reflection on alternative models of togetherness and raises questions about how design can shape our understanding of family and make care tangible.
This approach alig ned seamlessly with our concept of every person receiving their Shape at birth. The idea of pulsating light further translated the rhythm of breathing, giving the object a vivid, almost lifelike presence.
The course concluded with a one-week exhibition at Bauhause reuse (BHROX) on Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Berlin, which marked an important highlight of the project. The exhibition showcased the Souls that had been developed throughout the process, presented within a complete and coherent display. The curatorial concept invited visitors to reflect on the notion of family: where it begins, where it ends, and how alternative forms of kinship might be imagined. VESTA was introduced as an example of how design can foster care within family structures, raising the question of whether objects of interior design might be considered genuine “members” of the family.
Audience response was highly positive. The use of individual breath patterns as a formative design principle drew particular interest, while the evening vernissage highlighted the lighting installation’s pulsating effect, reinforcing its vivid and almost animate presence.
