TOLO SITZ

Design & Development

The Tolo Sitz is introducing a new way of integrating wool into contemporary interior design. In Germany, tons of sheep’s wool are generated as waste every year, mostly because it cannot compete with inexpensive plastic alternatives from abroad and is considered as too scratchy for textile clothing manufacturing. Yet the material possesses important qualities such as the regulation of humidity, absorbation of pollutants, damping of sound, and not ot mention the natural feeling of wool that is emotionally pleasing to humans.

The Tolo modules are felted from german, swiss and austrian wool. Felting is an ancient technique in which wool bonds with itself and without any additional materials or binders, to form a three-dimensional object. This principle is therefore very sustainable and extremely contemporary. In this case, we take this principle one step further. Since the module is felted in a geometric, three-dimentional way, the module fit into their wooden frame solely through interlocking, without screws or adhesives so the module becomes upholstery and connector altogether.  Serving as its fastening mechanism, the Tolo modules are a starting point of wool-objects of contemporary interior design and should be thought further.

The bench is just one of many applications; when suspended in a grid, the same modules become room dividers or acoustic panels. Manufactured from a single type of material, the felt module is ultimately fully recyclable.
